CAPA | Hastings Secondary College

Our students have the benefit of two strong school traditions of achievement in the creative and performing arts combined with an enthusiastic and highly skilled staff to guide them to new heights of excellence.

Extra-curricular activities include bands, dance ensemble, drama ensemble, choir and musical production.

Students can audition for the College Dance Company, which is an enrichment and extension dance group. They hold auditions every year, so if you miss out keep applying each year as you improve as a dancer. Listen out for audition opportunities in your PC class.

Campus dance groups are open to everyone who is enthusiastic and interested in dance. See the PE or CAPA staff at either campus for information.

Visual Arts and Music are mandatory courses in Years 7 and 8, as set by NESA (NSW Educational Standards Authority). Students will undertake more than the minimum 100 hours each. Drawing and sketching is one element of the Visual Arts curriculum which all students experience in Years 7 and 8.

Dance is part of the PDHPE curriculum. There are dance groups operating at both Campuses which practice at lunch times and perform at the Dance Festival and Port Macquarie Eisteddfod. Hasting Secondary College Dance Company is a combined group for which students may audition (in person or via video).

The Creative Industries Academy enables student to pursue further learning in Visual Arts, Drama, Music and Dance. Each student is expected to nominate a major and minor focus, though will be exposed to all four creative elements.

In Year 9/10 students may select courses in Visual Arts, Drama and Music as electives. In Year 11/12 they may select these for their HSC courses (Music has three options: Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension).

We have a proud history of students achieving in the Creative and Performing Arts in the HSC, with many recognised as “distinguished achievers” and being nominated for “HSC Art Express” for Visual Arts, “HSC Encore” for Music and “OnSTAGE” for Drama. Past student and alumni have been accepted into both the Sydney and NSW Conservatoriums of Music and NIDA (national Institute of Dramatic Art) and have performed professionally in our very own Glasshouse.
