Debating and Public Speaking
Students at Hastings Secondary College are invited and encouraged to join debating teams and enter debating and public speaking competitions. Both campuses have a proud record and tradition of success in these areas.
The Premiers Debating Challenge is open to teams from Years 7 and 8, Years 9 and 10 and Years 11 and 12.
The Junior State Debating Championships are for students in Years 9 and 10.
Students with an interest in and flair for public speaking are encouraged to develop their skills to become confident effective speakers. They are invited to join school debating teams and to participate in the statewide competitions available.
Our students are also encouraged and given opportunities to participate in public speaking competitions which are open to both government and non-government schools.
The Plain English Speaking Competition is for 15 year old students or older.
The Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award is a competition for 14 year old students or older.
The Lions Youth of the Year is open to 15 to 19 year olds.
Both of our college campuses have a long, proud and successful record in these competitions.
Teachers coach and mentor students who wish to be involved in any of these competitions, helping them to develop the skills needed and helping to build their confidence and self-esteem.
